While watching a local Sunday Football TV programme, a good and interesting topic was brought up and discussed; why Maltese clubs’ financial crisis have not changed in recent years? This thanks to some individuals that are pumping their money into Maltese football, what seems the only reason why football in Malta is still breathing, thanks to their investment.
The interesting question was, how local clubs can start getting some revenue income? As top flight Maltese football is played in 3 stadiums, Ta Qali Stadium, Hibs Stadium and Hamrun Stadium (also referred as Victor Tedesco Stadium) and the higher percentage revenue goes to the M.F.A the clubs income is not enough to keep their club building and competing for long. So imagine the situation a Maltese club can have every season if he doesn’t qualify to Europe or either winning the League or the Cup, practically nothing as it is the only revenue a Maltese club can get thanks to Uefa.
Many suggested that if clubs really need to get money to cover their costs plus injecting some profit, they have to invest in building their Town Stadiums. It makes sense to me, if we finally see the home & away system implemented in Malta, surely all clubs will gain. Another point taken was that it doesn’t make sense anymore to play in a 30,000 Ta Qali Stadium with an average attendance of 2,000 people for both sides in a local football match. ‘Bring football to the people’ motto will get back people to support their home town club. With Town Stadiums plus other facilities both parties will gain. Last but not least if these Town Stadiums will be build in every town in Malta & Gozo, they need to market their investment as it will become a business.

We must try and improve the local scene, also get band clubs, foreign football club supporters club involved. We must all come together.
